Hidden Gems in Grand Rapids: Unique Local Spots You’ve Never Heard Of

Grand Rapids is full of hidden gems that even locals might not know about. From secret gardens to offbeat museums, there’s always something new to discover in this city.

Start with the Fulton Street Farmers Market, a hidden treasure in the city’s Eastown neighborhood. This market has been around since 1922, offering fresh, locally grown produce and handmade goods. While it’s not exactly a secret, it’s often overlooked by tourists. If you want to shop local, this is the place to do it. Check out the market’s schedule here.

In Grand Rapids, “Handfuls of Small Stones” honors the creation story of Kcymaerxthaere, a fictional culture by artist Eames Demetrios. Located in Canal Park near the 6th Street Bridge, this marker by the river tells of a time when small stones were cast into the water to symbolize creation. Part of a global art project with over 140 markers worldwide, it evokes a dawn where sunlight and the Milky Way reflected over the river. To find it, head to the north end of Canal Park and walk toward the river. Learn more here.

If you’re into history, head to Voigt House Victorian Museum. Tucked away in the Heritage Hill neighborhood, this preserved 19th-century home gives visitors a glimpse into the life of a well-to-do Grand Rapids family from over 100 years ago.
