A new initiative is taking root in Grand Rapids, inviting homeowners to transform their yards into spaces for native plants, pollinators, and fresh food. Kind Hearts Bloom, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering community through gardening, has launched Community Roots, a program designed to expand green spaces across the city.
The program provides materials, design, and installation, along with two years of support to teach residents how to create and maintain thriving gardens. Participants can choose native plants, vegetables, or a combination of both.
The idea grew after volunteers helped transform a member’s yard into a flourishing garden filled with native species. The space quickly attracted pollinators, birds, and butterflies, showing just how fast nature responds when given the chance.
About Kind Hearts Bloom
Kind Hearts Bloom has become known for connecting neighbors through flowers and food. Programs include:
Grow & Give: empowering residents to grow and share flowers, herbs, and vegetables with their community.
Neighborhood Blooms Yard Share: turning unused yards into flower gardens that support the nonprofit’s mission.
Community Roots Gardens: now expanding to help residents establish front and side yard gardens that feed both people and pollinators.
How It Works
Community Roots provides a hands-on approach where volunteers and homeowners work side by side. Preparation involves laying cardboard, soil, and mulch before planting. Once established, the gardens require minimal maintenance while providing lasting benefits for biodiversity and community well-being.
Applications for the first Community Roots cohort are open through October 6, 2025. Even if not all applicants are selected this year, submissions will help show demand for future expansions of the program.
