A Neighborhood Named After a Legend: Charles E. Belknap

The neighborhood takes its name from Charles E. Belknap, a man of many accolades including being the first Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America, the mayor of Grand Rapids in 1884, and a U.S. Congressman in 1888. The hill that grants the neighborhood its distinctive lookout over the city is accessible via staircases on Division, Fairview, Fairbanks, and Newberry Avenues, offering breathtaking views that span miles.

Educational Institutions with a Rich History

Belknap Lookout is home to the historic Coit Creative Arts Academy, originally established as Coit Elementary School in 1880.
