Fika Grand Rapids: A Warm Welcome to Coffee, Brunch, and Community

GRAND RAPIDS NEIGBORHOODS

A new kind of café experience just opened its doors on Plainfield Ave NE, and Grand Rapids has already fallen in love. Fika is a plant-based, gluten-free coffee shop and brunch spot with a mission rooted in community, connection, and comfort. Here’s what to know about one of the city’s most exciting new openings.

The name “Fika” comes from a Swedish tradition—taking a break to connect over coffee and a treat. At Fika Grand Rapids, that philosophy is baked into everything they do. Whether you're grabbing a latte to go, sitting down for a warm brunch with friends, or browsing the adjacent market, you're invited to pause, gather, and feel at home.

Everything on the menu is 100% plant-based and gluten-free. That includes brunch staples like chick’n & waffles, French toast, avocado toast, and breakfast sandwiches, along with smoothies, bowls, and a wide variety of coffee drinks made with Squibb Coffee. Kids get their own menu too, with grilled cheese, pancakes, and more.

The vibe is casual but intentional. You order at the counter, grab a number, and can either hang in the cozy café or the adjacent market while you wait. Market items include housemade goods and thoughtful grocery finds.

Owners Becca and Nick Van Liere launched Fika with no big investors—just their passion for food, design, and neighborhood hospitality. Their vision? To create a space where people feel welcome, valued, and nourished in every sense of the word.

From community-centered values to comfort food you can feel good about, Fika is already becoming more than a coffee shop—it’s a space for gathering. Head to 1359 Plainfield Ave NE for a bite, a brew, and a break.
