Looking for plans this weekend? Whether you want to create something with your hands, take a glowing walk through John Ball Zoo, or catch a live show downtown, Grand Rapids has something going on. Here are three events worth checking out.
Burn & Banded Hat Workshop at Spruced Studio
Friday, April 11 | 5:30–8:30 PM
5120 Plainfield Ave NE, Suite B
This hands-on workshop at Spruced Studio lets you design and burn your own custom hat,. You’ll choose from a wide range of hat styles—think fedoras, ranchers, boleros, and even ball caps—and use heat tools and materials like leather straps, feathers, and ribbon to make it your own.
The workshop includes your choice of hat, a design template, six accessories, and step-by-step instruction. It’s recommended for ages 16 and up due to the use of a heat tool. Registration must be completed at least 48 hours in advance. If you want a custom design, there’s an option to upgrade for an additional fee.
This is a great option for a creative night out or for anyone looking to walk away with something one-of-a-kind.

Grand Rapids Lantern Festival at John Ball Zoo
BEGINNING Now through June 15 | Wed–Sun, 7:30–11:30 PM
1300 W. Fulton St.
The Lantern Festival is back for its third year at John Ball Zoo, and this time there are new lanterns and interactive displays. Visitors follow a mile-long loop through the zoo filled with glowing, handcrafted Asian lanterns that blend storytelling, culture, and wildlife.
It’s a family-friendly and stroller-friendly event that’s perfect for all ages. Timed tickets are available online, and since the entire experience is outdoors, dressing for the weather is a must. If you’ve been before, this year’s new additions make it worth another visit.
MercyMe: Live 2025 Tour at Van Andel Arena
Saturday, April 13 | 7:00 PM
Van Andel Arena
MercyMe brings their Live 2025 Tour to Van Andel Arena this Saturday, with support from Zach Williams and Sam Wesley. This is a major event for Christian music fans, featuring a mix of chart-topping hits and new material from one of the genre’s most celebrated groups.
For those looking to upgrade their experience, the Acrisure Lounge offers perks like a private entrance, access to a state-of-the-art lounge, light appetizers, a drink ticket, private restrooms, and a dedicated bar. Note that you’ll need both a regular concert ticket and a separate Acrisure Lounge ticket to get in.
That’s your weekend lineup: build a custom hat, wander through glowing lantern displays, or catch a Grammy-nominated band in the heart of downtown. More events are coming your way next week—stay tuned.
