Downtown Grand Rapids will once again transform into a citywide winter art experience when World of Winter Festival returns for its seventh year. Running from January 9 through March 1, 2026, the festival is the largest free winter festival in the United States and continues to draw visitors outside during the coldest months of the year.
Spanning multiple locations throughout downtown, World of Winter features light-based art installations, live performances, and interactive activities designed for all ages. All events and exhibits are free to attend and located within easy walking distance of one another.

When to Visit
World of Winter officially opens on Friday, January 9, and continues through Sunday, March 1. Art installations are typically open daily from 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM, though many light-based displays are best viewed after dark.
The festival is busiest after 5:00 PM and on weekends when most performances and activities are scheduled. For those looking to explore at a slower pace, weekday daytime visits from Monday through Thursday offer a quieter experience with fewer crowds.
What to Expect
The 2026 festival features more than 60 large-scale artworks created by international and local artists. Installations include illuminated sculptures, interactive displays, murals, window exhibits, and temporary public art designed specifically for winter viewing.
Each piece is thoughtfully placed to encourage exploration across downtown, making it easy to experience the festival over multiple visits. Many installations are interactive, inviting visitors to engage directly with the artwork rather than simply observe it.
