Spring is in full swing at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, and there’s a lot more happening than just blooming tulips. From butterflies to evening exhibits and special events, here’s what you can check out right now.
Butterflies Are Blooming
Now through April 30
This is the largest temporary tropical butterfly exhibition in the country, taking place inside the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. Walk through a warm, lush space filled with thousands of free-flying butterflies and moths from around the world.
- Spring Nights at Meijer Gardens – On April 22 and April 29, the exhibit stays open late for a more relaxed evening experience.
- Inclusive Night for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Guests – April 9, 6:00–8:00 PM. A quieter, after-hours version of the butterfly exhibit designed for visitors who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
Family-Friendly Activities
The Lena Meijer Children’s Garden is open and full of hands-on fun for kids. Other areas to check out include:

Earth Day—Every Day
April 26, 1:00–4:00 PM
Celebrate Earth Day with eco-friendly activities designed for all ages in the Children’s Garden. No registration needed.
Japanese Tea Ceremony
May 17 at 11:30 AM, 1:00 PM, and 2:30 PM
Experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony in the Teahouse located within the Japanese Garden. Led by trained tea masters in kimono, the demonstration showcases the rituals of matcha preparation in a peaceful setting.
Great Gardens Gala – 30th Anniversary
May 16
Meijer Gardens is marking 30 years with this annual event. The gala celebrates decades of community support, sculpture, and landscape design. More details will be announced soon.
James & Shirley Balk Café
Open for lunch daily and dinner on Tuesday evenings, the café features a seasonal, locally sourced menu. Sit under the Dale Chihuly glass ceiling sculpture or head outside to the Grand Rapids Press Terrace. Options include salads, sandwiches, small bites, and Michigan craft beer and wine.
DeVos-Keeler Gift Shop
The on-site gift shop features handmade goods, jewelry, accessories, and garden-themed items. There’s also a great selection of kids’ books and toys if you’re visiting with the family.
