Return to the River Festival 2025: A Fantasy-Themed Celebration on the Grand River

Grand Rapids is set to transform its riverfront into a vibrant, mythical playground during the Return to the River Festival, happening Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24, 2025.

This free, all-ages music and art festival invites the community to enjoy the public spaces of Monroe North, including 555 Monroe, Sixth Street Park, the Riverwalk, and the Sixth Street Bridge.

A Fantasy Theme

Now in its fourth year, the festival embraces a magic, mythical, fantasy theme, with art and activities inspired by dragons, unicorns, wizards, and fairies. This imaginative atmosphere brings a new layer of wonder to one of Grand Rapids’ most unique public events.

What to Expect

  • Live Entertainment: Over 25 DJs, bands, and performers will bring music to the waterfront throughout the weekend.

  • Art Installations: Large-scale, interactive art displays will add visual magic, alongside live painting and performances.

  • Creative Activities: Printmaking stations, crown-making with the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, face painting, caricature art, and community art projects.

  • Family Fun: Free cotton candy, free books from local partners (Grand Rapids Public Library, Schuler Books, Cellar Bird Books), and a puppy petting zone with the Humane Society of West Michigan (Saturday only).

  • Shopping: The Sixth Street Bridge will host a Merchant and Makers Market with jewelry, toys, art, home décor, clothing, and more.

  • Food & Drink: Over 20 food trucks and carts offering everything from tacos to pizza, barbecue, empanadas, and desserts.

  • Accessibility: A low-sensory zone will be available on the west end of the bridge for attendees who want a quieter space.
