West Michigan has no shortage of great sushi restaurants. But which one is the local favorite?
We asked West Michigan residents to share their favorite places to get sushi, and the responses came pouring in. After counting more than 120 restaurant mentions, we narrowed the results down to the 20 most recommended sushi spots in West Michigan.
Some are longtime Grand Rapids favorites. Others are tucked-away restaurants you might have driven past a hundred times. And yes, even Meijer managed to make the list.
Here are West Michigan’s Top 20 sushi restaurants, ranked #1 through #20 and chosen by locals.

1. Ginza Sushi & Ramen Bar
Taking the #1 spot is Ginza Sushi & Ramen Bar.
Ginza received more than 19 mentions, giving it a noticeable lead over every other restaurant in our poll.
Voters repeatedly described Ginza as consistent, said it never disappoints, and several people made it clear that Ginza was their hands-down choice for the top spot.
Located on Michigan Street in Grand Rapids, Ginza combines sushi with ramen and other Japanese dishes, making it a great option when not everyone at the table is craving sushi.
More than 120 restaurant mentions later, Ginza officially takes the crown as West Michigan’s favorite sushi restaurant in our community vote.

2. Mikado Sushi
Coming in at #2 is a true longtime West Michigan favorite.
Mikado Sushi on 28th Street received strong support from longtime customers, including one voter who said they had been going there for more than 20 years.
Restaurant trends come and go. Keeping customers coming back for decades is a different accomplishment entirely.
Mikado came very close to the top, earning the #2 position in our community ranking.

3. Kawa Sushi
Taking the #3 spot is Kawa Sushi on Bridge Street.
Kawa has made an impression on Grand Rapids sushi fans, and the comments reflected it.
Several voters acknowledged that eating here can be a little more expensive than some other options, but they also said the quality makes the price worthwhile.
That enthusiastic support was enough to put Kawa comfortably inside our Top 3.

4. Nagoya
Nagoya takes the #4 spot.
Its all-you-can-eat sushi was easily one of the biggest talking points among voters, with commenters also praising the lunch options and overall value.
If your definition of the appropriate amount of sushi is "keep going," Nagoya probably deserves a spot on your list.

5. Maru Sushi & Grill
Rounding out West Michigan’s Top 5 is Maru Sushi & Grill.
Maru was one of the most consistent names throughout the voting and appeared on several people's lists of favorite places.
It has been part of the Grand Rapids sushi scene for years, and judging by the voting, it still has plenty of loyal customers.

6. Jaku Sushi & Grill
Just outside the Top 5 is Jaku Sushi & Grill.
Both Jaku and Jaku North received mentions, and the restaurant appeared repeatedly on people's lists of regular go-to sushi spots.
That kind of repeat support pushed Jaku all the way to #6.

7. SoHo Sushi
SoHo Sushi comes in at #7, with voters highlighting its lunch specials and made-to-order all-you-can-eat sushi.
That gives diners a chance to explore different rolls while still getting sushi prepared to order.
For anyone who can never decide which roll to order, this might solve the problem.

8. Umi Sushi & Grill
Consistency was a recurring theme among Umi fans.
One regular customer even singled out the Godzilla Maki as something people need to try.
Any sushi roll named Godzilla probably deserves at least one appearance on the dinner table.
Umi's loyal following earned it the #8 position.

9. Tokyo Grill
Tokyo Grill received plenty of love from West Michigan sushi fans.
Some voters didn't need a complicated explanation for their choice. Their reviews essentially came down to one thing: it’s delicious.
Sometimes that's all the argument you need.
Tokyo Grill takes the #9 spot.

10. Simple Fish
Rounding out the Top 10 is Simple Fish.
Commenters praised the quality of the fish and careful preparation, with one voter describing it as some of the best-quality sushi around.
When the voting got this competitive, comments like that helped separate the Top 10 from the rest of the field.

11. Sushi Yama
One of downtown Grand Rapids’ more unusual sushi experiences is hiding underneath McKay Tower.
Sushi Yama is tucked away in the building's lower level, and longtime customers seem to enjoy telling people about this downtown hidden gem almost as much as they enjoy eating there.
That local following earned Sushi Yama the #11 spot.

12. Ju Sushi & Lounge
Ju Sushi was repeatedly included among people's favorite local restaurants, earning enough support to reach #12.
Located in Grand Rapids, it has become a dependable choice for local sushi fans and came very close to cracking the Top 10.

13. Meijer
Yes. Seriously.
Meijer officially made West Michigan’s Top 20 sushi list.
Several voters specifically mentioned Meijer sushi, particularly as an affordable and convenient option. Sushi Wednesdays received some love too.
Sometimes your favorite sushi spot apparently comes with a grocery list.

14. Wasabi
Wasabi earned the #14 position, with commenters mentioning the Breton and 44th Street area location.
One voter also gave the restaurant's friendly staff a special shoutout, proving that the experience matters almost as much as what arrives on the plate.

15. Ato Sushi
Ato showed up on multiple lists from people who clearly know their way around West Michigan’s sushi scene.
That repeat support was enough to put it comfortably inside the Top 20 at #15.

16. Sakura
Sakura landed at #16 after being recommended by locals who also named several of the restaurants that eventually reached our Top 10.
It might not have dominated the voting, but it clearly has its fans.

17. Mizu Sushi
Our list stretches beyond Grand Rapids with Mizu Sushi in Holland.
Mizu only received a couple of mentions, but its supporters were enthusiastic. One voter went so far as to call it the best.
That was enough to put this Holland sushi spot at #17.

18. Sushi Market at the Downtown Market
The Downtown Market earned several mentions, particularly from people looking for a convenient downtown lunch option.
Commenters specifically called attention to the sushi and lunch specials, making it an easy stop if you're already downtown.

19. Fujiyama
Fujiyama combines sushi with the full Japanese steakhouse experience.
It's a familiar name for many West Michigan diners and a good option when your group wants more than sushi alone.
It earned enough community support to take the #19 position.

20. Lucky Sushi Cafe
Rounding out our Top 20 is Lucky Sushi Cafe.
It may not have received as many votes as the restaurants near the top, but it had enough loyal supporters to earn a place among West Michigan's 20 favorite sushi spots.
If you're planning to work your way through the entire list, consider this your twentieth stop. Or your first. We aren't judging.

Do You Agree With West Michigan?
More than 120 restaurant mentions went into creating this list, but no restaurant ranking is going to settle the great West Michigan sushi debate forever.
So now we want to hear from you.

More Than Just Finding a Place to Eat
One of my favorite things about living and working in West Michigan is discovering the places that make each community feel different.
A neighborhood isn't just the houses on its streets. It's the coffee shop you stop at Saturday morning, the restaurant where everyone knows your order, the park you walk to after dinner, and, apparently, where you go when the craving for a spicy tuna roll hits.
That's a big part of why I created Grand Rapids Neighborhoods. I want this site to be a resource for discovering what it's actually like to live, eat, explore, and put down roots in West Michigan.
If you're considering a move, explore our neighborhood guides and homes for sale throughout Greater Grand Rapids. And if you have questions about buying, selling, or finding the right West Michigan neighborhood for you, I'd be happy to help.
Until then, I've apparently got 20 sushi restaurants to visit.
