The Grand Rapids Gold, currently in their second season at the Van Andel Arena, are gearing up for a redemption season after a challenging 9-23 record last year. Head Coach Andre Miller, determined to turn the tide, leads a revamped team with fresh faces, including standout Hunter Tyson from the NBA champion Denver Nuggets. Despite a season-opening loss to the Motor City Cruise, the Gold displayed resilience and potential.
This season, the team aims to emulate the success of their NBA affiliate, the Denver Nuggets, who clinched the 2023 NBA Finals. With an overhauled roster and an entirely new coaching staff, including Tyson’s addition, optimism abounds. Brittney Whitefield, the marketing and PR manager, anticipates improved synergy among the coaching staff and expects a significant uptick in games won.
In a strategic move, the Gold is shaking up their schedule with an increased focus on weekend games, recognizing the unique energy and enthusiasm Friday and Saturday nights bring to the arena. More than half of this season’s games will fall on weekends, promising an electrifying atmosphere for fans.
The Gold is also enhancing fan experiences with new initiatives, including promotional and theme nights. A novel opportunity for fans to get on the big screen has been introduced, requiring only a smartphone to record a video for a chance to be featured during games. Excitement peaks on Nov. 18, as the first 2,000 fans will receive a replica championship ring during the team’s Nuggets Night.
While the season opener against the Motor City Cruise ended in defeat, it showcased moments of promise. A dynamic game saw Grand Rapids making a comeback attempt, fueled by Hunter Tyson’s impressive 24-point performance. Andrew Funk contributed with 19 points, showcasing the team’s depth and potential. Jay Huff and Armaan Franklin added 15 points each, hinting at a season filled with thrilling matchups and exciting basketball.
