menu-meta

Are you looking for a classic hot dog? There’s a spot in Grand Rapids for all you hot dog lovers!

History

Yesterdog has been in business since 1976, so you know they’ve perfected the art of the original hot dog. The restaurant was created by Bill Lewis, who dreamed of building a better hot dog.

Since 1991—the first year Grand Rapids Magazine included a hot dog category—Yesterdog has consistently won the “Best Hot Dog” award.

The inside of the restaurant transports you back to the 1930s, with vintage posters, an original cash register, a jukebox, and a gramophone horn used for collecting customer tips.

Rules

According to the Yesterdog website, there are seven simple rules:

  1. Cash ONLY.
  2. No line: The staff starts from one side of the room and works their way down—no one is first.
  3. Order your hot dog first.
  4. Specify if you’re eating here or taking it to-go.
  5. Order your drink.
  6. Add any sides: chips, pickles, or soup (available in the winter).
  7. Pay, receive your food, and seat yourself.

Pretty simple, right?

They’re Famous

Yesterdog has drawn plenty of attention from celebrities and locals alike. Recent visitor Aidan Hutchinson (Detroit Lions player) joins a list that includes Janet Jackson, Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and Senator Carl Levin. The restaurant has also been featured in movies like American Pie and Why Him?.
